Clam with pinched mantle?

Post by DonnieP on Tue 18 Jan 2011, 1:35 pm

Anyone ever deal with pinched mantle on thier clams? My gold Maxima started showing some tiny white dots on it mantle a couple of weeks ago kinda like ich on a fish's fins and the last few days it has been showing signs of pinched mantle so I did a 20 minute freshwater dip. I used ro-di water and got the ph and temp the same as tank and put the maxima in it and swished it around now and then and left it for 20 minutes. I been reading on the net that this is a safe treatment, only time will tell. If anyone has had experience with this, please post back and let me know what kind of results you had.

I haven't dealt with that yet. Is it pyramid snails?

No snails, I checked, These tiny little pimple like spots smaller than a sugar grain perfectly round just showed up on the mantil, maybe ten in total, they more or less disappeared and then the mantle started to wrinkle, not any certain spot, just the whole thing. I will watch it and see, may need to re dip in a week or so. Its my experience with clams that once something starts to go wrong its hard to bring them back but since everything else in the tank is doing so good, its got me wondering what it could be. I will keep ya posted.

Whelk? Take a look late at night. Most of your bad critters come out late at night.

I don't think a whelk, I do have one snail with the long feeding tube I don't think its a whelk, prolly Nassarus, I look every night with lights out and have seen nothing. I had a large flatworm like 1" x 2" that attacked and killed a blue Crocea but I caught him in the act and removed the clam and the worm but this case is baffling to me. The clam is back out about half way since the fw dip and he does look better. There was still one or two tiny white dots on him before the dip but they are gone now, I will just have to watch and see.

I got this little gold Maxima at Petco for like $18.00 because it came in marked as something else and the manager had to go ahead and sell it for the price they had listed, it is a tough little guy, it survived Petco for several weeks laying on the bottom on its side before I bought it, I would hate to see it go now.

This is a pic before it got sick.

Did some reading on this Donnie, doesn't sound good. White Spot Disease is what it's called.
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/volume_6/volume_6_4/clams.html
Towards the end there they mention the white spots.

http://reefcentral.com/forums/search.php?searchid=3633990

From reading I found it is mentioned in a book called "Giant Clams" by Daniel Knop. It was about 90% loss rate on clams with this disease.

I don't know Gabe, I have read that report before and I think what they were refering to on the white spots was just an example using ich as the example, it never mentions white spots on the clam, just in the example.
The classic example is something like Marine Ick (Cryptocaryon irritans) on a saltwater fish. The specimen may look perfectly healthy (i.e., asymptomatic) at your local fish store but a few days after it is purchased and placed in new environment, it suddenly exhibits the white spots symptomatic of the disease. In this case the fish was successfully holding back the disease while it was settled in the retailer’s tank, but once moved, its immune system was weakened by stress, and the fish was no longer able to keep the Ick infection in check.

I may be reading it wrong but I think that was just an example of how a critter can look healthy one minute and be dead the next.
I have read about clams all over the net and can not find one instance of white spots like this on a mantle.

Ok well I read it wrong then, lol. Basically from some other posts on the reef central forum there is a disease called white spot that was mentioned in Knops book. There was another post that said someone at Clams Direct said they have heard of it but haven't seen it in years.

LOL, leave it up to me to get something that no one has seen for years. Well, I will keep up the fw dips and see how it turns out.

Well, the little Maxima didn't make it, I removed it from the tank today. I don't think I will try another, especially a tiny Maxima like it was, it was only maybe 2", thats really tiny for them to be in a tank.
