20 gallon soft coral/mantis shrimp tank

Post by ritter678 on Sun 16 Jan 2011, 7:27 pm

Green Sinularia, Toadstool, Devil's Hand Leather (Hornsby family special), Superman Mushrooms, Green Mushrooms, Purple/Blue Mushrooms, Dragon Eye Zoanthids, Eagle Eye Zoanthids, DFS Super Pink Palythoas, Unknown Yellow Zoanthids, DFS Blue Octopus Ink Heteroxenia, XL Feather Duster, Yellow Tail Damsel, Blue Damsel, Small Green Mantis Shrimp (N. wennerae). I'm trying to get the xenia to cover the back glass. I'll try to get pics of the mantis but he's small and never keeps still. 2 Koralia Nanos, Eheim Heater, 4 x 24w T5 ATI bulbs. Zero mechanical filtration for now.

You got that 20 looking good. I got my Xenia to take off on the overflow. I hope they cover the entire overflow.

Do you use epoxy to stick it on the wall?

I just put the rock they were on real close to the wall and they just took off on it. Those things are really slimy! You can barely hold onto then when they are out of the water. The only way I have ever been able to attach them is with a rubber band.

Epoxy doesn't do a good job sticking smooth surfaces. I tried it and it didn't work. I used the superglue gel. It fell once but I put it on thick and it's good now. Make sure to clean the glass really well if you try it.

Re: 20 gallon soft coral/mantis shrimp tank

Post by ritter678 on Mon 17 Jan 2011, 6:39 pm

It's funny how things tend to pop up in tanks that aren't heavily stock with fish. I've had more odd worms pop in in my mantis tanks than I've ever seen in my reef. There is an odd worm, very thin, really long that come out at night and hangs out on my toadstool when it's closed up. I tried to get a picture of it but it was gone in an instant when the camera flash came on before the picture took. It was out again the next night and I tried to grab it with my hand, (not recommended), and it's head was on top of the toadstool and the rest of it was all the way down in the rock at the base of the toadstool. This worm is a least a foot long. I'm going to keep trying to get pics. It is not like any other worm I have ever seen.

Here is a video of some big green worm that was in one of my old mantis tanks, (and is probably still roaming around somewhere).

A game of "Smash the Stick" with the mantis. Smile Turn your volume up. Anyone care to put their hands in there?
