29 Gallon BioCube - My Daughters Tank

Post by BigBlue on Tue 08 Feb 2011, 12:39 am

Pics to come soon.....

Question first - The tank has a tunze nano protein skimmer in the back of it. The skimmer never seemed to work right to me. Do any of you have any experience modifying the skimmer? I hear that there are ways to modify it but have never seen it myself.

In a 29, why dont you modify it out the door:>) In my opinion a skimmer in a nano is a nono. Heck it only takes a 4 gallon water change every two weeks to keep it in tip top shape. I am a firm believer that a skimmer in a small tank does more harm than good, it removes more good stuff than bad, of course, this is just my opinion and we all know what they say about opinions:<)

I won't pretend to understand everything that a protein skimmer does, let alone know the mod. But I can tell you that listening to the advise that Donnie has given me with my nano put me in a situation where I kept SPS in it literally from the first day that I put water in it. It helped that I bought my rock from 5 minutes down the road and had basically 0 die off... but no protein skimmer has worked beautifully for me. My 7 pieces of SPS that are looking great will attest to that as well. :-)

By the way... if you're looking to put LEDs in that let me know. If you buy the gear I might just do the mod for you. I'm wanting to tackle a DIY LED build. Just know it would be my first one. Very Happy

That makes sense to me Donnie. That thing is noisy anyway! I think I will try your DIY reactor and give that a go.

Matt - that was my thought when I realized how big your LED fixture was. I am a DIY type person anyway! Sounds like a good project.

I did the mod for the skimmer I ran in the red sea and Jason ended up with it and it worked great

If you're looking for a tag along guy to help out with the build let me know! I was a computer tech for a few years so I understand all of it quite well. No expert by any means, but I get it. :-)

Got coralline? Smile That's nice! Just curious, how often do you/her feed the sixline? I had mine in my 75 when it was tiny. It grew huge and fat in no time and I only feed about every other day. I moved it to my 37 because I got a mandarin and it got skinny and died even though I fed about the same. I didn't know if those needed constant supply of food like a mandarin or if something else went wrong with it.

Yea, she loves the coraline and will not let us scrape it all off. It is good now! There was a hole about 4" in diameter that you could see through a few weeks ago. The wife got ahold of it and cleaned it up some.

She has had the six line for about 6 months now and feeds it flakes every day and mysis every few days. Not sure about their needs though. I have one that keeps finding a way to get into my sump. I guess through the overflow tube??? Anyway, I don't go out of the way to feed it. Of course, it probably gets plenty of left overs when I feed the display.

Stop by and I'll show you the skimmer..... if you decide to keep it. It will vastly improve it's performance. As for it being noisey.... ???? Got me on that one. I don't even know mines running.
Here's a vid for the mod.
