Re: Ghetto Rig
There is some scary stuff in that thread. I like the non water tight outlets hanging over the water. I hope they have that thing on a GFI outlet.
That Ritter guy on there is going to be in big trouble when his wife finds here hair clip!!

Re: Ghetto Rig
a couple years ago i got a 55 gallon tank from a friend of mine for practically nothing, and it had no hood or lighting, and i wasnt willing to purchase a hood... as i was broke as a joke(some things never change)
so i "IMPROVISED"
i took a 1x12 shelf down out of my shed, cut a couple pieces of it to length, and took a lamp off my desk... as a temporary solution... that lasted for atleast half a year lol...

not very effective.... but better than a dark tank!
then i got creative one day and picked up a 20 dollar shop light from lowes and some leftover plywood scrap from my job, and cut up an ole screen door with a plexiglass window.
i was a few steps into this project before i decided i should document it.

note to self.. predrill holes, splits are bad... w/e it worked.

mmm trimmed out! now it wont fall off the top! but something is missing... do you know what it is??? CANT FEED! DOH!

so i fixed it!!! but they might jump out...

TADA!

a lil stain...

put on the light!

one hell of an improvement!!!! the light fixture, $20, the plant & aquarium bulbs, $12 each (X2). not electrocuting myself by knocking a desk lamp into my fish tank = priceless.
and just for giggles... before i knew better... this was oscar chow every month!

and the same tank a few months later. the 2 goldfish are the only 2 that didnt get eaten.

Re: Ghetto Rig
Good job. I just recently got a 55 gallon tank for free from my mom. It has no hood or light. Just havent wanted to break down and buy one. Might try this option

Re: Ghetto Rig
The shelf doubled as a hood but still worked as a shelf! Genius!
That woodbuild was pretty sweet though.

Re: Ghetto Rig
thx guys, considering i hacked it out on the tailgate of my truck in about 10 minutes, and got a couple years of use out of it, id say that was a good project for me.
