Bryopsis-How to get rid of it.

Post by Rockman386 on Wed 15 Feb 2012, 11:15 pm

Anyone have any luck getting rid of Bryosis? I have a 28 nano with led. Its been going for a little over a year. I have had it in the tank for awhile. So far it has not got out of control, but cant seem to get rid of it. My next step is magnesium. Any help I would appreciate.

If it's mild I've heard sea slugs will eat it.

I think mag is most popular.

You may also look into phosban/ GFO. That is what I believe killed off mine.

What about a sea hare guys? Don't they eat the stuff? Guys this is a friend of mine, not really from here locally but I asked him to join up and check out the forum, lots of very knowledgable people here.

Welcome to the forums! All the way from Kokomo too... can't help but think of beach boys now. :-)

That's exactly what I was thinking Donnie... I think sea slugs and sea hares are the same anyways.

Not sure if Bryopsis was in my tank but I know snails and tangs wouldn't eat it but a Sea Hare (Dolabella sp.) knocked it out pretty quick. Problem with them is if they eat all the algae they will starve. Best to take it back to the store or pass it on to someone else that can use it, if it cleans up the algae. It took about a week before it started eating but once it did the algae was gone in a day or 2. Good thing is that they don't cost much and it's safer than the mag treatment.

Yes its Kokomo allright. But its cold here! lol I would rather live in Texas. I love the heat.
Thanks for the replies. I will try the sea hare. My magensium just arrived today, but its my last resort. My phosphate was .25. If I get that to 0, Will that help my situation?

Should help but I think Bryopsis will grow even in a low nutrient environment.

Yep, a real pain. I was going to go the Mg route, but after putting in a fresh batch of GFO, scraping the back glass and a large water change with fresh ZERO TDS saltwater mix... it died off within a couple of weeks. I would have to suspect phosphates as your culprit. Was in my case. Are you getting ZERO TDS from your water?

I did a water change today, going to test phosphate again tom. Here is a pic from the front of my tank. It grows really in one spot, but small sprouts in other areas. I have had it for about 6 months. It goes away, then comes back.

Looks really good from my seat!?! Phosphates kits can be sketchy. Best one I've used was the Hanna Phosphate Checker. Chemi-pure Elite may be of some help too. I realize it may be hard to run a GFO reactor on your Nano.

Always in the same spot makes me think you might have a particular rock that's leaking phosphates in that specific area.

I'm still learning. Im going to order a TDS meter tom. to make sure my ro is working right. I changed my chemipure elite last week, I also have been leaving my refugium light on for about 18 hours trying to see if that helps. Also changed my purigen today. Donnie has helped me out Alot! I would not have some of the corals i have in there now, if I knew then, what I know now. I would have chosen more hard corals. The softies grow way too fast and out of control. I do love my zoanthids though.
I have a 14 gallon nano, and has no signs of Bryopsis. Very Happy
